We’re not just blogging for the sake of expressing ourselves or talking about what fancies us, but, just like any other marketing person, we have targets to hit and sales to make. To us, this target means drawing as many visitors into our website. This is traffic and this is what makes us a success. So, how to bring traffic to your affiliate website?


As mentioned in my past articles, constant effective content is crucial to the success of an affiliate website. If you are an excellent writer, good for you. You can expect traffic to build up on your site, sooner or later. If not, that’s okay. You can still do this by choosing the niche that you are most knowledgeable about, passionate about, or at the very least, smart enough to learn and write about, long enough to make you hit your target income. Eventually, you may also get to sell your successful website at an excellent price.

Bring traffic to your affiliate website following these steps

As a beginner in the business, you must know that not all traffic is good. What do I mean?

There are several websites out there that will offer to get you thousands or even millions of visits to your website at a price. An example is where you can purchase a really huge number of visits at a minimum rate of five dollars. Crazy, isn’t it?

What happens is that they employ website robots or bots, also referred as crawlers and spiders. These bots run on automated applications that are programmed to replicate an Internet user’s actions.

Since their visits are not done by actual people, the clicks are not valid because, obviously, there will be no conversions or sales generated out of these clicks. Suffice to say, only real visitors purchase.

Just to be clear, I’m not saying you can’t do that. It still is an option for you. At this stage, traffic is still traffic, and with this strategy, you can generate conversions in just one day, instead of waiting for a couple of months. Yes, it’s swifter but it can also be costly, especially since you are just starting. You may also run the risk of being scammed. Yes, be careful with such websites as a lot of them are frauds and are out to steal your money.

The bottom line is valid traffic is still the best with regard to our affiliate website. This way, we build credibility with our stakeholders and sleep better at night.

There are two ways in order to achieve this goal. One is to consistently deliver valuable content for the market, and secondly, to adopt some cool and free traffic-building methods which I will share with you today, but before we get to that, I will discuss with you how to get to analyze your traffic so that you are able to effectively target your market. So when you start to bring traffic to your affiliate website, you should monitor what kind of traffic it is.


Again, we are marketers so the greater our knowledge of the market, the more targeted our approach, and the more we can make those clicks happen. How? Analytics.

You can employ visitor tracking plugins to help you monitor the behavior of your website visitors. There are a lot of these tools out there. Some of the popular ones include Google Analytics, AFS Analytics, MixPanel, Jetpack, Kissmetrics, and ExtraWatch.

Google Analytics is one of the free tools that I suggest you consider. This is a good option because it does not affect the speed of your website, unlike other plugins like Jetpack. Plus, there are helpful information that can be gleaned from its tracking which are critical in your understanding of the market. You can connect your Google Analytics to the search console so that it automatically does the tracking. Do not pay attention to some videos that recommend that you buy another plugin in order to supervise the analytics coding. Why? This is unnecessary and it will only make you dependent on the plugin. You can, instead, just refer to your analytics dashboard, where all the valuable information you’ll ever need is found. So, let’s proceed to how to install it to follow the type of users after you bring traffic to your affiliate website.

Google Analytics Installation

Here, I will take you through the best method of installing your Google Analytics.

Create your account. Remember, there are no costs to do this so go ahead. There will be some prompts as soon as you do this, and you will eventually arrive at the portion where you will need to key in the website code.

Note that this is a follow-through of my previous article about creating your affiliate website. There, I suggested using WordPress as your content management system and choosing Optimizepress as your theme. So here, I will be explaining how to accomplish this step in Optimizepress, but actually it is super simple if you install it even directly in WordPress through Google Site Kit for WordPress.

With OptimizePress, accomplishing step one is a breeze. Just click on ‘Theme Settings.’ Copy the website code from there and paste it on the ‘Header Scripts.’ By doing this, Google will be informed that you require the tracking codes in order for you to monitor all the pages inside your website.

Okay, what if you do not yet have an OptimizePress theme, and, instead, chose one that’s basic and included in the free package? Don’t worry. Just have the SEO pack (all-in1) installed. After doing so, proceed to the ‘General Settings.’ Click on the ‘Google Analytics ID.’ Note that you need to use your identification number and not your complete code.

Super easy way to install Analytics

Google just released Site Kit for WordPress. If you install it, that will automatically install analytics, PageSpeed, Google Search Console, and Google AdSense in one. It’s done just with few clicks and does not require any code insertions.

If you want a manual way and wish to use your full code, you may also do so. This would require you to paste the complete code in the site’s header, ahead of the </head> tag. To do this, you have to be knowledgeable about file transfer protocol or FTP, which is a means of file exchange on the Internet, or you will need to have access to the editor, which is the more savvy way. So, I suggest you just do the first.

With analytics, you are empowered to study data from your visitor traffic and find out which articles are trending in terms of subject matter. Once you get this information, you can then write more of these topics to build up more traffic.

Also, through analytics, you are able to determine which articles get the most clicks or sales, which will again guide you how you can optimize these conversions.

If you do not have these statistics, you will always act without real basis, and this is pure inefficiency. It’s like a stab in the dark.

For newbies, these insights and data are crucial to your growth. Understanding what bolsters conversions and how allows you to make changes in your website such that it becomes a conversion machine. If you’ve followed my articles, you may have heard me say this, and I will say it again here. You can always refine, recalculate, and alter anything when you head on this journey. This is how you become an expert.

There was one time when I started this affiliate website on the business of brewing beer, DIY mode. I noticed that after posting reviews and recipes on the business, visits and conversions were starting to build up. I was ecstatic.

To better understand this phenomenon and to polish my strategy, I decided to check on my analytics. It revealed that my widely advocated articles were my monthly reviews, and some were about the unfavorable tastes. Imagine if I did not know this. I would have gone ahead, spent precious time, and exert a lot of unnecessary effort in research in order to produce content that did not particularly account for my huge traffic. Lesson learned. You should, as well, be well-advised to base your actions from facts and figures.

Understanding Traffic

When you research about website traffic, you will come across different sources of traffic. Just briefly, these are: organic, direct, paid search, email, referral, social, and other sources not falling under the previous categories. I won’t go into the details of each but will be touching on some of these that are relevant to us at the moment.

Organic Search is the best option to bring traffic to your affiliate website

When you say organic searches, simply put, these are searches enabled via the search engines such as Internet Explorer or Google Chrome. So, traffic caused by these searches are consequently called organic search traffic.

When you are just starting to build your affiliate website, it may be a challenge to stick out amidst the noise. There are just too many competing websites that talk about similar topics that it will be hard for you to be searched. The final goal to bring traffic to your affiliate website is SEO optimization which results in organic traffic.

Remember that all these hundreds of thousands of websites are elbowing for the mere ten spots on Google’s initial page. Also, how are we supposed to fight it out with Forbes, NerdWallet, Amazon, or Buzzfeed? That is how great the odds are for you but do not be discouraged.

The good news is, there’s an easy way to claim that topmost rank on Google’s first page. You just need to know-how. The keyword is key.

Traffic Through Keywords

Since you may be new to this, I will just skip on the basics on keyword research, which is big in terms of ranking well. Later on, we shall dive deeper into detail with regard to this.


To achieve a high rank, you have to be a consistent blogger. More critically, you have to be a consistent blogger who is good at keyword research. So any payment for quality source which bring traffic to your affiliate website you should consider as an investment, not cost.

Because we know our subject matter or niche very well (I assume most of you do in your chosen niche), we are able to compete against those writers who get paid to produce these Top 10 DIY Beers in Buzzfeed. Most likely, the writer just researched the topic and barely speaks from experience about how to make artisan beer, just because he was employed to do it.

As for us, we know our beers or whatever product you wish to focus on your website. We own our time. So, we are able to conduct thorough research and produce in-depth articles that our target market love to learn about.

Our large competitors such as CNet occupy large offices and employ several employees, and thus, are driven to generate revenues to pay those off. While these big websites focus on highly inclusive keywords such as the ‘best coffee makers,’ we are most competitive to talk about ‘most efficient 10-cup programmable brewer.’

Why? Here’s another tip: the more specialized our topic, the lesser our competitors, and the more likelihood of being found by our target market. Get it?

If you take a look at our chosen subject matter above, we used a total of five words. This is referred to as ‘long tail keywords.’ For newbies such as you, stick with these. You can have a minimum of three and a maximum of five words.

This strategy is geared toward having enough control over our market vis-à-vis our length of experience as an affiliate marketer. Of course, our large competitors will not bother about the multiple-serve programmable brewers because they’re too small a market for their size and experience. This is your opportunity.

Of course, in the case of our specialized keyword, we only expect a couple of visits in a day but let’s just say you are able to accumulate a total of eight in 24 hours. Given that you have 500 pages and they’ve all been visited, that would mean 4,000 per day. For starters, this isn’t bad.

What is also good about narrowed down keywords, you get to connect more with your audience and conduct deeper conversations, which will result in excellent ranking.

As you build authority and credibility in your subject matter, you can then level up and aim for a wider scope. So, to bolster our number of visits to the website, these are my suggestions:

  1. Do your homework and determine which keywords would apply to your niche but where competition is manageable. SEMRush is great keyword research tool, and it’s free.
  2. Once you find that keyword, learn how to adopt it in your blog.
  3. As you grow, develop the skill to churn out lots of content that revolve around this keyword.
  4. Take steps to also publish articles that relate to the broader niche in relation to yours. This may take a lot more research though, but you’ll learn fast.
  5.  Establish credibility by learning how to funnel traffic. This is done by connecting specialized topics with broader subjects.

So, there you have it. Maintaining and sustaining an affiliate website is exciting but also demanding. As I always say, persist and endure. Nothing great is accomplished overnight. Enjoy every phase and don’t stop growing. When you feel you’re ready, evolve and move a notch up. You’ll discover that there is always room to grow in this business.

Okay, now let’s go to high traffic keywords. You may wonder how we can determine what keywords drive up traffic to your website. There’s a tool for this. It’s called a keyword tool. There are free keyword tools available on the Internet that you can download. Just search for ‘keywords everywhere.’

For those who can afford to pay a monthly rate of USD 19, I recommend Jaaxy as a keyword tool but if you have the budget, you may want to check out SEMRush which is priced at a monthly rate of USD 99.

Knowing which keywords rank well will help you choose the right one for you, even if you are only starting. Remember what I said earlier. Keyword is key to getting those clicks and conversions.

Okay, now that you’ve installed your keyword tool, be mindful not to be too dependent on it. These are statistics and therefore not absolute. However, having this information to guide you is better than deciding without real basis at all.

Once you’ve got these keywords before you, be mindful, still, about which keywords would appeal most to your market.

For example, which would entice you more among these two titles:
1. ‘Installing Your Hardwood Floors: How-To Reference,’ or
2. ‘Guide to Install your Hardwood Floors’?

You’ll definitely agree that it’s the second title. Why? It’s because it sounds more like how you and I would state it.

When you produce your content, always think like you’re conversing to someone. Connect with your market. Yes, you may use keywords to get ranked but our end target is to urge our visitors to purchase what we are marketing.

Browse for Trends to bring traffic to your affiliate website

Using a keyword tool is only one of the many ways to ensure that you are well-informed and up to date about your market so that you can manage visitor traffic in your website.

Another way is to keep an eye on what the market is abuzz about. You can do this by using Google Instant. Just key in a series of words on the search bar and Google will come up with a list of more than 20 one-of-a-kind ideas in relation to this keyword. This can give you an idea of what is highly searched at that time.

Believe me, as you continue further on in your research for that one topic, you will discover that there is indeed lots of opportunities just under this category. This compounds into huge potential. For instance, if you type, ‘how to make money,’ you can click on one of the related topics that Google Instant will show. So, we choose, ‘how to make money online at home.’ Then, there are more topics that will appear as you click and hold. Some of these are: 1. Real ways to make money from home without any investment, 2. Creative ways to make money, 3. How to make money from home as a kid, etc…

So we choose ‘Creative ways to make money,’ and we get:
1. Sell free stuff from Craiglist,
2. Sell your photos,
3. Rent out your room,
4. Sell your skills,
5. Teach classes online,
6. Become a field agent,
7. Become a secret shopper,
8. Babysit for busy professionals, and the list goes on and on.

So, you see, just from ‘how to make money,’ we get a host of ideas that can now be inspirations for your website, and we are just warming up. Imagine what you can unearth by conducting more fierce research.

Be Social and use it to bring traffic to your affiliate website

I’m not suggesting that you use social media for reckless posts. No. This is too blatant and annoying at times. Be discreet in following your market and leverage this to bring traffic to your affiliate website.

Be a part of your targeted communities. Know where they are hanging out. Do they use Facebook a lot? Are they active on LinkedIn? Follow them and start conversations with them

Share your knowledge and be authentic. There is nothing so iffy than someone who sounds fake. Once you get your audience interested, they may want to connect with you or follow you too.

If social media is not your cup of tea, don’t worry. It’s not mine as well but you can treat it as a tool to better understand your audience and to offer them real and authentic feedback.

For example, during the course of your conversation, you may read about a comment that he or she is having problems about getting the right patina for their worn-out table. This would give you an idea, for instance, to write about how to do this at home using some tools that you’ll be recommending.

There’s actually a lot of things to discover when you are socially connected to your market. You do not even have to post a lot, if you’re not yet comfortable with it. You just have to be discerning about their behavior and interests which may spark inspirations in your journey as an affiliate marketer.

May I suggest that you craft a plan on how to allocate your time using social media as a tool to grow with your market. This way, you don’t needlessly waste time and are able to devote your resources to other tools and achieve a more balanced perspective.

Explore Partnerships

Another way to build traffic is to explore ways to collaborate with influencers. I’m not an expert in this strategy but this works for other affiliate marketers so I will discuss this a bit as one of the options.

This may be a bit tricky for a beginner.

Unless you have a track record in your niche, not many would want to collaborate with you. Influencers are also occupied with their own concerns that they would only consider a partnership if you can give them something in return.

Most of the time, they will only give you the time of day if your expertise matches their expected level. There are other ways to go around it and you only have to think creatively. Again, know first what interests them and focus on how you can provide it.

I’ve rounded up some suggested partnerships that you may want to explore. First, you may want to work with a peer to coordinate your posting to increase traffic. Secondly, you may coordinate with someone who can pose as a guest blogger. Third, you may do live YouTube events with a peer. The more of you, the bigger the targeted audience, and the greater the chances of bolstering traffic to your sites. Lastly, you can do Q&As in relation to your subject matter.

Here are also some ideas to get the targeted influencer to notice you and hopefully agree to collaborate and bring traffic to your affiliate website:
a.  post questions on Twitter directed,
b. leave continual comments on expert columns,
c. produce content that talks about a subject matter that is connected with your targeted person and then solicits their opinion about it,
d. write about the influencers in your niche and make sure to include your targeted person. Later on, notify them about this post.

Understanding Paid Traffic

I mentioned this at the beginning of our discussion. As the word suggests, this is the type of traffic that involves you paying so that you can have those targeted clicks and conversions. Yes, there is a cost and a risk that you might not get what you paid for, or worse, be scammed.

If you want to try anyway, be ready to spend as you go along. This is not a long-term solution but just to keep the traffic up and make adjust your content while hoping that this marketing campaign works.

This option involves a lot of trial and error and so many beginners prefer failing without lose money at the same time.

Pay Per Click

Bing, Google Adwords, and Facebook offer pay per click (PPC) services if you’re interested to bring traffic to your affiliate website and pay for it. Check out their websites to find out more about their offers. Know what is relevant to your niche and let this guide you in the decision process.
